Finding the right rock climbing equipment is only
one facet of preparing for a climb. Rock climbing is a challenging
and often exhausting activity, so action should be taken to train
for a trek. Strength and endurance are keys to rock climbing and
should be built up as much as possible before hitting the trail.
Practice will also help climbers prepare mentally to make sound
decisions and the right moves while climbing.
Once a climber is mentally and physically prepared for a trip,
certain items must be obtained. Essential rock climbing gear includes,
but is not limited to:
• A helmet- Use your head, and keep it protected.
• Shoes- Shoes come in different styles for different types
of climbing. The most important things to look for are fit and
comfort.
• Ropes and a harness- Unless you’re free climbing,
or bouldering, you won’t get far without a rope and harness.
• Caribiners- These metal loops, with sprung or screwed
gates, are used to connect the harness to the rope.
Before any rock climbing adventure, it is vital that ropes, harnesses
and caribiners be closely inspected. Make sure that there are
no cracks, tears or fraying. If any part seems weak or damaged,
do not risk using it. Rock climbing equipment can be rather expensive,
but should not be skimped on. The good news is that much of the
gear will last for years and years, depending on frequency of
use.
