Many rock climbing shoes are designed for all
around use, but some are designed for a specific type of climbing.
The most important aspect of any shoe is a good fit. Beginners
can stick with an all around shoe while developing skills and
climbing muscles. More advanced climbers may want to look into
trad shoes or those designed specifically for bouldering.
Bouldering is a risky type of free climbing which requires immense
focus and strength. Bouldering climbs are often short (3-5 meters
above the ground), to reduce the risk of injury. Climbs are commonly
referred to as ‘problems’. Proper rock climbing shoes
are absolutely necessary for anyone who attempts this type of
climb.
Bouldering shoes feature an exaggerated, asymmetrical toe box
which directs power toward the big toe. Many have a downturned
sole also designed to drive power to the big toe. They are available
with laces or hook and loop straps. Synthetic materials are used
to decrease stretching. These rock climbing shoes are equipped
with soft soles for extra foot sensitivity.
